A NEWSPAPER BEFORE A FEDERATION
At the beginning of the twentieth century, Albanian immigrants in the United States were building community institutions while following events in a homeland still under Ottoman rule. Albanian-language newspapers offered a way to share ideas, report on political developments, and sustain cultural life across distance.
Dielli began publication in Boston on February 15, 1909, issued by the Besa-Besën society. Fan S. Noli was its first editor. Later in 1909, Faik Konica assumed editorial responsibilities, bringing his literary voice and intellectual influence to the paper. Their editorial work belonged to a wider community effort, with other writers and organizers—including Kristo Floqi and Kristo Dako—contributing to its early life.
As Albanian-American societies sought stronger coordination, the newspaper became a forum for debate about community organization and the national question. In December 1911, Kristo Floqi used Dielli to call for a meeting among societies; that organizing context preceded VATRA’s establishment in April 1912. The chronology is clear: Dielli came first, by more than three years.
The Library of Congress catalog describes its early holding as Dielli = Sun, published in Boston by Besa-Besën in 1909–1910, followed by the related title Dielli e flamuri. The catalog record is a guide to holdings, not a claim that a complete digitized run is available online.
A PUBLICATION WITHIN VATRA
VATRA was established in 1912; Dielli already had a three-year history. Following the federation’s formation and consolidation, the newspaper became its official publication. In that relationship, Dielli has reported Federation activity, addressed Albanian-American national concerns, carried commentary on significant events, and preserved writing by community intellectuals.
Its pages also connect readers separated by geography and generations. They are a record of journalism and debate, not a single unchanging institutional voice. News reports, contributed scholarship, opinion, and individual commentary should be read according to their authorship and genre—not automatically as formal policy adopted by VATRA.
The 2026 VATRA Constitution and By-Laws, Chapter 10, Articles 71–77, formally address Dielli and other publications. They provide for appointment of the editor by the Federation president in consultation with the Board; describe the newspaper’s purpose to inform members and the wider community; address print and online publication, editorial duties, publication principles, and the editor’s relationship with the organization. Dielli is therefore an official VATRA publication—not described here as legally independent of the Federation.
